Frequently Asked Questions

How many quarts of oil does a 2008 BMW X5 take?

The 2008 BMW X5 requires exactly 5 US quarts (4.7 liters) of engine oil when replacing both the oil and filter.

What viscosity oil does the BMW X5 use?

The manufacturer specifies 0W-20 Full Synthetic for all ambient temperature operating ranges.

What size socket is needed for the oil drain plug?

The oil pan drain bolt requires a 17mm socket, torqued to 25 ft-lbs (33 Nm).

How often should you change the oil on a 2008 BMW X5?

Under normal driving conditions, replace the oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles (or 12 months). Under severe conditions (short trips, heavy stop-and-go driving), change oil every 5,000 miles (6 months).

Do you need to replace the crush washer on each oil change?

Yes. The aluminum crush washer deforms to create a liquid-tight seal against the oil pan. Reusing an old crush washer can cause oil leaks and stripped oil pan threads.
